COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Youth Era, a local non-profit offering peer support and free meals to youth, opened a new center Monday at 303 S Front Street in the former Medford Mattress building. The center is open from 3 to 6 pm and offers substance recovery and leadership programs (said Program Manager Jose Ornelas).  KOBI-TV
  • Over the weekend, more than 190 vendors and about 2,000 visitors gathered at the Jackson County Expo in Central Point for the Southern Oregon Flea Market — with sellers coming from across Oregon and Northern California and the next event scheduled for May 24.  KOBI-TV
  • Jackson County Fire District 5 firefighters joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Firefighter Stair Climb over the weekend in Seattle, climbing 1,356 stairs at Columbia Center while in full turnout gear (including Division Chief Bustard, Engineer Gonzalez, and Firefighter Humphrey) to raise funds.  KOBI-TV
  • The Southern Oregon Home & Garden Show returns Friday, March 21 through Sunday, March 23 at Jackson County Expo. Builders Association CEO Dr. Joey Minear says over 175 vendors, workshops, and a Q&A session will offer home improvement ideas—admission is $5 with free entry for children 12 and under.  KOBI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At the local Harry & David, about 100 employees were laid off as part of a restructuring plan, with one worker confirming the unexpected cuts. NewsWatch 12 is seeking further details from the company and its parent, 1-800-Flowers.  KDRV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country singer Chris Young will perform July 16 at The Expo, and hip-hop star Sir Mix-A-Lot with Freedom Williams will appear July 17 as part of the Jackson County Fair concert series at the fairgrounds (21 Peninger Road) in Central Point. Tickets begin March 17.  MedfordAlert

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Oregon State Treasurer said nearly 75 percent of families are struggling to pay basic bills, with almost half reporting they could not cover a $500 emergency expense. More residents are saving for retirement and taking financial education classes (from the Oregon Financial Wellness Scorecard).  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pinehurst Elementary was awarded a $219k grant from the Oregon Department of Energy to install a 19 kW solar array and 71.5 kWh battery system that will let the school serve as a resilience hub during emergencies. The project will break ground this summer with True South Solar as the contractor.  KDRV
