  • Today, a groundbreaking ceremony took place at 113 S 1st Street for the new Central Point Community Garden. The garden is a joint project by Access, the Grange Co-Op and Alderwood Assisted Living to grow fresh produce for ACCESS food banks in Jackson County—its first crop will be planted later this year.  KOBI-TV
  • The Josephine County Food Bank is bracing for a 20% drop in food deliveries after the USDA halted $500M in shipments that once supplied 30% of its food, and its partners are also affected by multiple funding cuts. Starting in April, Executive Director Josephine Sze warned the food bank shelves will empty — a sign that more donations are needed.  KOBI-TV
  • Dogs for Better Lives was chosen as Grand Marshall for the Pear Blossom Parade on April 12; the nonprofit trains & places service dogs & supports the Pear of Paws festival theme.  KOBI-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early this morning near Medford, bicyclist Matthew Edward Davenport, 45, was struck and killed on Foothill Road near Corey Road by a green 2021 Toyota 4Runner—he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:42 a.m. and his next of kin were notified, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.  MedfordAlert

CRIME NEWS

  • The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Applegate identified skeletal remains found outside Jacksonville on April 14 as those of Nathan Louis Merkel, 63, of Wimer—he was reported missing in September 2023 and his next of kin has been notified while persons of interest on unrelated charges remain in custody as the investigation continues.  MedfordAlert
  • Detectives found skeletal remains in the Applegate Valley in April 2024 and later identified them as 63-year-old Nathan Louis Merkel from Wimer, who was reported missing in September 2023—police have now taken persons of interest into custody on other charges as they continue investigating his suspicious death.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Senate passed SB 470 on Tuesday, allowing hotel and vacation rental guests to sue for unauthorized recording in private spaces—lawmakers noted that only common areas may be recorded. The bill now heads to the Oregon House for further consideration.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Medford organization is giving free wigs and styling services to women fighting cancer and other illnesses that cause hair loss as part of its Over the Top program — volunteers and donors help about 80 to 100 women every year regain their confidence.  KDRV
