COMMUNITY NEWS

  • For nearly 40 years, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Jackson County has worked to protect local children from abuse—today during Child Abuse Awareness Month. Executive director Tammi Pitzen visited Sunrise this morning to explain how locals can spot abuse signs and attend free training seminars—she urged adults to take action.  KOBI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Tyler Peterson was sentenced to 90 months for burglary and criminal mischief after he vandalized an elevator at Rogue Retreat—damaging it repeatedly and impacting access for those with disabilities while also damaging an officer's car during his arrest.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crews have nearly finished demolishing North Medford High School's gym by removing 95% of the east and north walls nearly three weeks into the work, and the school has selected an architect and engineering team to start design work. Engineers will inspect the stability of the south and west walls (including the locker rooms, weight room and upper gyms) to decide whether to retrofit or rebuild the facility so a new space for PE, athletics and weightlifting is ready before school starts this fall.  KOBI-TV

  • The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation and Oregon AARP will host the Fraud Fighter Summit and Resource Fair on Saturday, April 12 — a free event starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Smullin Health Education Center on E. Barnett Road where speakers from the FTC and CCB will offer tips on identifying and preventing scams.  MedfordAlert
  • Medford City Council is considering changes to Main Street's bike lanes after mixed reactions from last fall's re-striping; in a meeting with Public Works director John Vial, the council selected three costed options ranging from 10k to $10 million and asked staff to study converting Main Street into a two-way road with bike lanes on both sides — no final decision has been scheduled.  KOBI-TV
  • Medford City Council met last week with Public Works Director John Vial to consider ideas for changing Main Street’s bike lanes that were re-striped in fall 2023—council chose three options from more than a dozen that range in cost from $10k to $10 million and directed staff to explore making the street two-way, though no final decision has been set.  KOBI-TV
  • State Representative Pam Marsh said two House Bills are coming to the Legislature to help protect Medford residents before and after wildfires; HB 3666 may be voted on today to let the Public Utility Commission certify utilities and HB 3917 would create a fund for fire survivors—details on the fund remain under discussion.  KOBI-TV
