- ➤ Two weeks ago, a new Community Garden began in Central Point to offer a space for growth and community activities. Charles Bloom, owner of Alderwood Assisted Living, said he and partners are restoring 17 raised planter beds at 113 S 1st Street+ and they hope to grow vegetables and flowers before the end of the year+. - ➤ The Pear Blossom Run will take place Saturday with a new free 'Couch to 5k' program for registered runners as the 5k starts at Oakdale and West 8th Street. The Mayor’s Cup shirt design contest drew over 1,000 submissions — a student from Hoover Elementary provided the winning entry and officials say registrations are rising toward pre-pandemic numbers. - ➤ The annual ACCESS Senior Fair returned Tuesday at the new Rogue X in Medford and drew more than 80 vendors to offer seniors valuable resources during its 30-year run. KOBI-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local girls ages 16 to 20 can join the free Rogue Girls Fire Camp, which offers a workshop on firefighting during June 13, 14, and 15 at the Regional Training Center on Agate Road in White City. Registration must be completed by May 10 for a limited number of slots—no prior experience is needed. KOBI-TV
- ➤ Southern Oregon Head Start will shut down half its services this Friday and face complete closure by April 18 if frozen federal funds are not released—917 children and 367 staff will lose access to its programs. Former State Representative Peter Buckley said program leaders have received no explanation from the federal government and are urging elected officials to act. KOBI-TV
- ➤ Scenic Middle School students took on extra lap challenges with weighted vests—where some laps counted twice—to raise $1,500 for Sparrow Everleigh's medical care, with a family friend donating based on the number of laps completed. KDRV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Oregon Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire unanimously advanced Senate Bill 83 today to repeal the controversial wildfire hazard map and its regulations. The bill now moves to the Senate floor—set for a vote soon—to allow local communities more control and redirect state funds to wildfire prevention programs. KDRV
- ➤ The City of Medford is asking for public input to help expand downtown boundaries—either in all directions or mainly south toward Barnett Road—to create a climate friendly zone and add more development options; an open house will be held on April 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Medford Library’s Adam Room.
