BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new restaurant opened Monday in downtown Medford at the old Porter’s location on Front Street—purchased last fall by the Italian chain that expects to add nearly 100 jobs. It will serve lunch and dinner every day.  KOBI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office dropped drug charges against local businessman Joel Caswell last month because evidence was insufficient, even as he faces more than 20 federal financial crimes—wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and tax evasion.  KOBI-TV
  • Police arrested a 47-year-old man facing 17 charges after he stole a black Honda Civic from a known acquaintance following a domestic disturbance on April 28 at around 3:50 p.m. on West Main St in Medford—his reckless driving caused multiple hit-and-run crashes as he fled through South Medford and Ashland before being detained.  KDRV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 70-acre prescribed burn is scheduled today near Butte Falls to reduce wildfire risks and boost forest health—crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry and Grayback Forestry, Inc. will ignite the burn off West Hukill Creek this morning and again tomorrow if weather permits.  MedfordAlert
  • Southern Oregon Land Conservancy bought a 142-acre parcel in Bear Creek Gulch (a diverse natural area with rocky cliffs, grasslands, and creeks) to support the future Mariposa Wildlife Crossing that will help animals cross a busy highway safely. The $700,000 purchase strengthens ongoing efforts to build connected wildlife habitats across the region.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson County Fire District 4, which serves nearly 5,000 residents between Shady Cove and Trail, is asking voters to approve a 10¢ levy increase in the May special election to maintain daily staffing of two paid firefighters. Fire Chief Travis Crume said the increase is needed to cover rising costs due to inflation and prevent service cuts—voters will decide in May.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Troy Cribbins, Chairman of Bay Area Hospital, discussed the hospital’s financial challenges after a $46 million loan default despite consistent payments. He explained that the board is exploring solutions for these issues—with special attention to mental health and child abuse programs.  KOBI-TV
  • Oregon doctors urged lawmakers today to pass Senate Bill 539 to limit hidden hospital facility fees that force patients to skip needed care—patient stories and high hospital profits drove calls for better bill transparency. The proposed law would require hospitals to notify patients in advance when these fees apply.  KOBI-TV
