  • Rogue Retreat’s Hope Kitchen in Medford employs unhoused people in an eight week internship that trains them for work and stable housing while earning their food handlers card—seven interns have secured jobs and eight found housing as the team prepares 120 breakfast and 320 dinner meals daily for local shelters.   • AllCare Health & the Jackson County Community Advisory Council granted $50,000 to the Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market to introduce $10 Protein Bucks for SNAP/EBT customers at its Medford and Ashland locations, aiming to improve access to local, protein-rich foods.   • The Jackson County District Attorney's Office said it will not file charges for a fatal stabbing in Central Point on June 8, 2024—finding that Edwin Poasa Galo used self-defense during a family dispute that left Fuavaa Edmond Umu dead and others injured—.  KDRV
  • The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that no charges will be filed in the fatal stabbing of Fuavaa Edmond Umu—who died on June 8 after a violent altercation at a Central Point home—because investigators found insufficient evidence to disprove self-defense.  MedfordAlert

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Logos Charter School’s Rogue Pack team won the 29th Annual Oregon Envirothon State Competition, earning their seventh state title and fourth consecutive win. The students will represent Oregon in Calgary this July.  KDRV
  • Rèal Brassuer, a second grade teacher at Abraham Lincoln Elementary, suffered a heart attack that led to heart failure and suspected rare leukemia after weeks of feeling unwell. He was flown to a Portland Providence hospital on Saturday and his family, including his wife Cheri who teaches at Lone Pine Elementary, is seeking community support — especially during teacher appreciation week.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office warns locals of phone scams in which callers claim to be Sheriff Aaron Grissom, saying there are civil documents to collect and asking for money via Bitcoin or gift cards. Officials advise residents to hang up and verify any calls using the official agency number — law enforcement will never request payment over the phone.  KOBI-TV
  • Slayden Constructors, Inc. will lead a $302M upgrade at the Regional Water Reclamation Facility in White City to meet new permit limits on phosphorus and nitrogen—funded by sewer revenue bonds and an EPA low-interest loan. Sewer rates will rise gradually as design concludes by September 2026 and construction wraps up by September 2028, with full compliance expected by September 2030.  KDRV
