COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Medford Association is hosting its monthly Third Friday event on Friday, May 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. downtown and at Vogel Plaza—featuring expanded vendor markets, art exhibits, dining specials and family activities to support local businesses.  MedfordAlert
  • More than 50 volunteers will gather downtown Medford Saturday, May 16 for the annual Day of Caring as the Downtown Medford Association partners with United Way of Jackson County to beautify local public spaces (further details are pending).  Rogue River Press
  • Applegate Fire District is giving away free Coast Guard-certified life jackets this week at Station 53 at 1095 Upper Applegate Road in honor of National Water Safety Month; supplies are limited and available during regular business hours.  KDRV
  • The 34th Annual Rogue River Clean-Up will be held on Saturday, May 16 in Rogue River, inviting community members from across the region to help with river conservation. Volunteers are encouraged to join this day-long event to preserve the local environment.  Rogue River Press
  • Communities are launching support programs for young people at risk of homelessness, based on a Johns Hopkins study and an official release from Oregon’s Department of Human Resources (OHR). The programs aim to address small struggles before they become lasting hardships.  Rogue River Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Medford's Nightmare Chamber Haunted House, a local staple for over 18 years, is for sale with buyers able to lease or relocate the space; if no buyer is found by Sept. 1, the attraction will host one final Halloween season (corner of Front and Third streets).  KOBI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rogue Valley Bird Day is set for this Saturday at Ashland’s North Mountain Park Nature Center from 8 a.m. to noon and is free to attend. The event offers guided bird walks, bird-calling demonstrations and hands-on crafts for all ages to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oregon fire service members joined a national safety institute in South Carolina for a full-scale wildfire demonstration that showed effective ways to reduce fire risk. Officials highlighted creating defensible space and home upgrades (ember-resistant vent screens and enclosed eaves) as key steps to protect homes.  KDRV
  • On Monday, May 13, BLM and Prescribed Fire Training Center crews finished burns on the 271-acre Forest Creek project (acquired through a timber sale) between Jacksonville and Ruch; they used commercial thinning and an underburn to lower fire risk and will mop up until June 1.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this month, a former fire chief from Nepal joined training sessions held by Rural Metro Fire in Josephine County to exchange firefighting techniques (including vehicle extrication and wildland training) with local fire agencies.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jackson County Vector Control District is marking Lyme Disease Awareness Month this May by sharing tick prevention tips in the county. It urged residents to stick to trails, wear long clothing, and check themselves and pets (tick keys are available at their office) to reduce risk.  KOBI-TV
