  • Medford is projected to see more tourists this summer as attractions like Crater Lake and sporting events draw visitors. Travel Medford forecasts that hotels and restaurants will benefit and that transient lodging tax from May visitation will rise from 5% to 8%—a sign of the record tourism season ahead.  KDRV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Boaters on the Rogue River in Jackson County are urged to exercise extra caution as winter high water events changed the river’s topography—shifting gravel and large rocks now create unexpected obstacles. Marine Patrol Deputy Noah Strohmeyer said all boaters must use Coast Guard-approved life jackets to stay safe in fast, cold water.  KOBI-TV

  • Local, state, and federal agencies conducted full-scale emergency preparedness drills at Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport on Thursday—simulating a major aviation incident.   • Oregon National Guard member Pedro Velasquez set a new world record for most hand-release push-ups in one hour at West Coast Strength gym—friends and spectators joined him while Maj. Tommy Vu supervised the count.  Rogue River Press
  • On Friday, the Oregon Department of Forestry sent over 20 firefighters to Canada and several U.S. states—14 to Alberta, four to Alaska, three to Minnesota, and one to Florida—to serve a two-week rotation under mutual aid agreements as wildfire season begins.
