Good morning, Medford. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Throughout June, ACCESS, Safeway and Albertson’s are running Bag Summer Hunger to let shoppers buy pre-filled food bags for $5 or $10 that directly help local families when school lunches are unavailable. ACCESS Food Programs Director Marcee Champion visited Sunrise this morning — explaining that the program meets a greater need during the summer — and urged community support.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The new administration has announced planned cuts to the Department of Education that may remove federal student aid programs in the 2026–27 academic year. Students at Oregon community colleges can use the Oregon Promise Grant for tuition (Rogue Community College officials noted that key support programs like TRIO may face changes).  KDRV
  • Rogue Community College will launch a new two-year Surgical Technology program (in partnership with Linn-Benton Community College and Providence Medford Medical Center) to help fill the local need for trained surgical technologists; enrollment for the fall cohort is now open.  KDRV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Forestry announced that fire danger will rise to moderate on Saturday, June 7, affecting 1.8 million acres in Jackson — Josephine counties amid hot, dry weather and forecast storms. New restrictions will ban open fires outside designated campgrounds and limit spark-producing equipment from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  MedfordAlert
  • Officials reported that Jackson Creek and Bear Creek in Rogue Valley have exceeded state bacteria standards, so residents are advised to avoid swimming and to closely supervise young children. The high bacteria levels are likely due to pet and livestock waste, illegal dumping, and leaking septic systems — factors that tend to worsen with warmer weather.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Public Defense Commission introduced a 12‐month plan to fix the shortage of public defenders in six counties including Jackson County; 4,400 people needed a lawyer. The plan sent a lawyer from Salem to Coos County in November 2024 (cutting the number of unrepresented people by nearly 25%) and will add a mobile team and change hiring rules (after a 185% rise in some counties) to bring more help to those in need.  KDRV
  • The Oregon Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment will host a Norwegian Foot March on June 8 in Medford — the event starts at 4 a.m. at U.S. Cellular Field with participants embarking on an 18.6-mile route carrying a 24-pound rucksack. Service members and civilians can earn an official badge by finishing the course within age-based time limits.  MedfordAlert
