COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Prescott Park in Medford is set to expand by acquiring 80 acres—40 acres purchased for $442,000 and 40 acres donated to the Parks and Recreation Foundation—which will extend its trail system to about 30—33 miles and improve access from nearby neighborhoods. The land deal is pending escrow and new trails are expected to begin construction in 2026 pending funding starting July 1. KOBI-TV
- ➤ Jackson County Fire District Three rescued a cat named Shaggy from a tree on June 9 after its owner said the cat had been stuck for at least three days—firefighters discovered the animal was entangled in fishing wire. KOBI-TV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters stopped a vegetation fire near the intersection of Agate and Pruett roads—north of White City—on the evening of June 9; crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry and Jackson County Fire District 3 quickly contained the blaze and checked for more fires while officials investigated the cause. - ➤ Fire crews swiftly knocked down a small grassfire reported on June 9 — at 4:30 p.m. — in the median of I-5 near milepost 44 north of Gold Hill, containing it to one-tenth of an acre and clearing the scene by 5:10 p.m. KDRV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Schools across Oregon will get budget relief as PERS lowers pension contribution rates for K-12 employers under Senate Bill 849 (introduced by Governor Tina Kotek this spring). Medford school district assistant superintendent Brad Earl said the $168 million in savings will help prevent staff cuts (even though rates may increase later). KOBI-TV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Oregon Department of Forestry raised fire danger to moderate in Jackson and Josephine counties after four human-caused fires started the season during triple-digit temperatures and gusty winds. New restrictions—banning debris burning, fireworks, off-road driving and spark-emitting engines from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.—are in place to help prevent more fires. KOBI-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Tina Kotek signed House Bill 4121 last month, which directs OLCC to establish a registration system for hemp products and label THC and CBD amounts—these rules will take effect January 1, 2026. Local business owner Tammy Sona of Sona CBD in Talent expressed concern that the timing may disrupt access to non-intoxicant products, and OLCC will offer pre-review opportunities for label drafts. - ➤ Medford City Council approved a $679 million budget last Wednesday for the 2025-2027 biennium, a 28% increase to cover higher costs for PERS benefits, wages, healthcare and a $200 million wastewater upgrade. The budget takes effect July 1 and follows a stable S&P Global rating — AA-. KOBI-TV
