COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Palm Fountain in Alba Park in Medford has been restored after nearly 30 years using local and state marijuana tax revenue—$42,000 from the Community Initiative Fund supported repairs to the Italian marble statue originally gifted in 1934 by the Palm family. The fountain now serves both park visitors and their pets.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A crew of over 250 fought the Upper Applegate Fire on Friday after a grass fire broke out near the 1300 block of North Applegate Road just before 7 p.m. on Thursday—helicopters dropped water continuously while ground teams limited the spread to about eight acres, and FEMA funds have been granted as rain forecast for the weekend may both help and hinder efforts.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Jackson County urged residents to use only legal fireworks to lower fire risks as fire season begins and 4th of July celebrations approach. They recommended following safety steps such as cooling used fireworks in water before disposal—measures meant to help prevent accidental fires.  KDRV
  • Rogue River Police Chief David Rash asked his fellow officers if any law enforcement meeting like those up north existed and started one when he found none. The new gathering will let officers share ideas and best practices.  Rogue River Press
  • Local immigration attorney Laura Lindley-Gutierrez warned today that recent policy changes weaken legal protections by allowing immigrants to be removed within 24 hours—forcing community members to travel from Medford to Portland and Eugene for ICE check-ins. She added that intensifying raids and new GPS tracking raise risks for asylum seekers and vulnerable children.  KDRV
  • Deputy Kenneth KC Merck of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office died Tuesday, June 17 after a medical event—he served with the Corrections Bureau since 2007 and is survived by his wife and five children.  KDRV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Since it started in January 2024, the Rogue Rapids Swim Team now competes at meets in the region and across the country. Co-founder Dr. Laurel Naversen Geraghty said the team received $10,000 from Medford City Council's Community and Cultural Investment Fund—helping 12 young swimmers with scholarships.  MedfordAlert
