COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hidden Bottle Hunt 2025 returns with a twist shown in a video and will run from June 26 through 29 to celebrate Oregon’s Bottle Bill anniversary. Participants can search for six decorated bottles hidden in public areas and when found they may choose a nonprofit partner for a $1,000 donation—each finder also keeps the bottle as a trophy.  KOBI-TV
  • The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation awarded $759,230 to 84 non-profits at Seven Feathers Convention Center on June 24+ groups from Coos, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lane Counties received funds to support education, youth development and basic community needs.  KOBI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avelo Airlines has flown over 100,000 customers on more than 900 flights from Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport in the past four years and is now offering one-way fares starting at $49 for flights to Hollywood Burbank Airport on Mondays and Fridays (its CEO Andrew Levy said the airline remains committed to affordability and reliable service).  KDRV

  • Rogue Valley is competing for the Best Wine Region title in the USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards—voting began on June 23 and will run until July 21—and the region is celebrated for its 60-plus tasting rooms and varied wines.  KDRV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from 2024 shows that private health care and social assistance jobs in Oregon increased by 16,100 to reach a record 301,000 jobs—a growth rate of 5.7% compared to a 0.3% rise in overall nonfarm payrolls. Projections indicate that this sector will continue expanding as retiring workers are replaced—with nearly one in five new state jobs expected to come from health care and social assistance.  MedfordAlert

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said this year's Upper Applegate Fire burned 468 acres in an area where last year's blaze burned 1,100 acres and cost $7.2 million, thanks to early staffing and proactive land management—fire crews were in place and hazard trees had been removed to speed up containment. Investigators are looking into the cause while BLM's work helped reduce the overall expense of fighting the fire.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After four years of planning, the 115-unit affordable housing project on Central Avenue in Liberty Park will not move forward—developers could not secure funding—MURA is set to explore other options for the site.  KOBI-TV
  • Governor Tina Kotek signed a bill that will allow striking workers to collect unemployment benefits after two weeks with payments capped at 10 weeks—public employees are now eligible for these funds. State Senator Jeff Golden and others criticized the measure while noting that only three other states offer similar benefits.  KOBI-TV
  • City of Medford held a ribbon cutting today to celebrate near completion of renovations at Howard School Park next to Howard Elementary School. The $2.3 million project started in July 2024 and adds amenities including pickleball courts, a splash pad, a dog park, a small basketball court, and an interactive playground for kids.  KDRV

  • ODHS is offering free emergency kits and batteries to older adults and people with disabilities who qualify so they can be better prepared for wildfires, heat waves and floods; eligible residents can request assistance through approved channels.  Rogue River Press
