COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Rogue Community Cat Rescue holds its first annual Miles for Meows walkathon fundraiser at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park with local food vendors and family-friendly games available. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.—activities start at 10:30 a.m. and the walkathon kicks off at 11 a.m.  KOBI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Medford Food Co-op board approved the purchase of a new property just south of South Pacific Highway and Garfield Street in a commercial subdivision near KFC and Jersey Mike’s. The co-op will close on the deal early September and plans to present designs for a 12,000 square-foot store later this fall — aiming to improve access and work conditions.  KOBI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies and Medford Police officers arrested two individuals after a vehicle ran a stop sign on June 26 and nearly hit a bicyclist, leading to a chase that ended with arrests for attempted eluding and interference with a peace officer.  KDRV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In 2024, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported 242 human-caused fires in southern Oregon with 97 started by equipment use+ while debris burns and recreation accounted for 38 and 36 fires. The agency said the public must follow safety rules+ to help reduce fire starts.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers passed HB5031 to provide $707 million for public defense as high caseloads and burnout have left many defendants without proper representation. The funding measures — including an SPPE program — are expected to help recruit and train new lawyers while easing current workloads.  KOBI-TV
  • Oregon counties will receive over $31 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes funding for 2025 to support essential services like road maintenance and public safety - senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden stress that rural communities need dependable resources. Jackson, Josephine, Curry, Klamath and Lake counties are among the recipients, with amounts based on federal land acreage and population.  KDRV
  • The city of Ashland announced a design-build contract with Medford-based Outlier Construction to upgrade its severe weather shelter at 2200 Ashland St—upgrades will include meeting building codes, adding sleeping accommodations, a new shower facility, restroom and laundry, and construction will begin in August and finish by the end of October.  KDRV
  • The United States Senate voted unanimously to reauthorize a bill that will provide over 700 rural counties with $75 million for schools, roads and search and rescue—support that includes funding for Oregon counties. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said he will urge the House to act swiftly to maintain this financial safety net and work toward a permanent solution.  KOBI-TV
