CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested after firing gunshots near a group of kids lighting fireworks on July 4th on Engleman Lane in West Medford—police charged 51-year-old Jason Stump with unlawful use of a weapon and disorderly conduct.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Forestry is flying two reconnaissance flights over Ashland, Greensprings and Applegate—investigating 20 reports of smoke. The largest report is a three-acre Pompadour Fire near Dead Indian Memorial Road east of Ashland—two strike teams and contract crews will work overnight to control the fires.  KDRV
  • Firefighters responded to over 20 reports of smoke and fire from Monday's thunderstorms that sparked multiple wildfires across Jackson County—one fire, the Pompadour Fire near Ashland, reached about 3 acres—and crews and aircraft from across Oregon joined efforts. Officials urged residents to report any new fire as teams continued to work on containment.  MedfordAlert
  • Fire crews are responding to a wildfire near Heppsie Mountain that is burning mid-slope on a northwest-facing aspect, and a Level 1 evacuation is in effect for nearby areas. Additional engines have been ordered+crews are launching an aggressive attack to slow the fire’s growth and protect adjacent areas.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shady Cove’s Mayor Jon Ball and Councilor Kathryn Nuckles resigned last Tuesday amid claims of workplace dysfunction and alleged incompetence by City Administrator Michelle Parry—one remaining councilor noted that some issues were fueled by social media misinformation. A special city council session will provide more details on Thursday at 6 p.m.  KOBI-TV
  • A portion of OR-238 west of Medford is closed due to downed utility lines and severe thunderstorms near milepost 36.2 at the intersection of Rossanley Road and Hanley Road, and ODOT crews are working on the scene while advising travelers to avoid the area — additional hazards may remain.  MedfordAlert

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medford leaders are thinking about starting a new medical school to help with the shortage of doctors in Southern Oregon and Northern California. A study by Tripp Umbach shows the area is ready for a regional M.D. campus — now local officials will work to secure funding and plan the next steps.  KDRV

SPORTS NEWS

  • After winning the District 8 championship, the Medford National Little League softball team will travel to Missoula, Montana, from July 18-25—where they will compete against champions from nine states for a spot in the Little League Softball World Series. The team of 13- to 16-year-olds is fundraising to cover travel and lodging costs—supporting their bid to represent the Western Region.  KOBI-TV
