ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An investigation began after a woodworking shop in Merlin was destroyed by fire late Monday night near the end of Enterprise Avenue off Pleasant Valley Road — crews from Rural Metro Fire and Grants Pass Fire Rescue responded quickly and used water from a nearby pool to help control the blaze. Firefighters took several hours to contain the fire—no injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.  KOBI-TV
  • The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Medford house fire on July 4—caused by fireworks after a firework from nearby kids landed on homeowner Tim Taus's roof and sparked a bush, melting a window and damaging the attic—reported by Taus.  KOBI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives from the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit are investigating a Medford Police officer-involved shooting that occurred on Friday, July 4 in Hawthorne Park—authorities say the inquiry is ongoing.  Rogue River Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Jackson County officials urged residents to know their designated evacuation zone today as wildfires burn across Southern Oregon and forecast hot, dry weather may spark more fires later this summer. The Know Your Zone system divides the county into over 100 zones to help send clear evacuation alerts + officials advise writing down and sharing this information with family.  MedfordAlert

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Larry Tuttle ended his tenure as chairman when he led his final Evans Valley Fire District board meeting on June 19.  Rogue River Press
  • Highway 238 remains closed between Rossanley and West Main Street in Medford after Monday night's severe storms as crews work to clear fallen trees and downed utility lines. Crews are making repairs — Pacific Power says the road may not reopen for up to two days — and motorists are urged to choose alternate routes.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jackson and Josephine counties have high fire danger and unhoused people are exposed to dangerous summer heat and smoke. Previously unhoused Christina Underwood said she felt like she was going to die from the heat during these tough summer months.  KOBI-TV

  • Jockey Jaime Lopez rode Eyez On Corona to win the AQHA Adequan Derby Challenge finals at Grants Pass Downs on July 5. He led the summer season while Hector Magallanes and his daughter swept the Firecracker and Derby Challenge to mark a key milestone in their racing careers.  Rogue River Press
