A Jackson County grand jury ruled that a Medford police officer was justified in using deadly force against Salvador Alex Sanchez—55-year-old local transient wanted on two counts of unlawful use of a weapon—at Hawthorne Park last Friday, and Sanchez was later indicted on charges including attempted first-degree assault and resisting arrest while an administrative review of the officer’s actions continues.

ODOT manager Dan Metz said planned layoffs (affecting 9 of his 15-person crew effective July 31) will reduce winter highway maintenance in the High Cascades, leaving key routes such as access to Diamond Lake impassable for weeks this season.
