COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ACCESS announced it will hold the Community Builders Celebration on September 5 in Jacksonville to honor partners serving the county’s vulnerable residents. The sold-out fundraiser will support ACCESS programs and feature NBC5’s Taylor Owen—Emily Storm as emcees while recognizing honorees including the Olsrud Family, Boise Cascade, Southern Oregon Subaru, Marianne Warren, United Rotary Clubs, and Jackson Care Connect.  KOBI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Raul Mesa-Solorio received a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter for the fatal drive-by shooting of Christian Miguel Barajas in West Medford on November 22 (the plea deal followed key witness testimony linking the shooting to an alleged gun theft).  KOBI-TV
  • Steven Newstrom—sentenced on July 14 to 22 months in prison with three years of post-prison supervision for online sexual corruption of a child—and Mark Harding—sentenced on July 17 to three years of probation for five counts of encouraging child sexual abuse after investigators recovered 800 images and videos of child pornography—were convicted in Jackson County Circuit Court following a SOCET investigation.  MedfordAlert

CULTURE NEWS

  • A local artist finished his 900 square foot mural Gratitude on the north wall of the Rogue Gallery Building in downtown Medford during July’s Third Friday event. He began the project in May and completed it in one month to honor the region's natural landscapes — a collaboration with the Rogue Valley Art Association and the Parks and Recreation Department.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill to repeal Oregon’s Wildfire Hazard Map, created under Senate Bill 762 to mark wildfire risks, now awaits Governor Kotek’s signature. Senator Jeff Golden said the map is too broad and that insurance companies should set new standards for safer homes—shifting the focus from government to industry in wildfire protection.  KOBI-TV

  • Southern Oregon offers several family-friendly events this weekend, including the Rogue Valley Farm Tour in Jackson and Josephine Counties on Sunday and the Wings and Eagles Airshow at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls with gates opening at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
