COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sundae, an 11-month-old Catahoula mix with a rich chocolate coat, is available for adoption at Jackson County Animal Shelter in Phoenix—she needs an active home and experienced owners to match her energy and training skills.  MedfordAlert
  • Today, the Rogue River Valley University Club next to the Holly Theatre in downtown Medford announced it will permanently close because of ongoing financial difficulties. Founded in 1910 and once a hub for local business and civic events with over 200 members at its peak, the club has sublet part of its building to a West African barbecue restaurant—its premises are now up for sale.  KOBI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Plans for a new development called Harbor City and Ollie's East are moving forward at the southeast corner of Hillcrest Road and North Phoenix Road in East Medford; the project will include a 960-square-foot coffee shop and a 2,700-square-foot pizza restaurant with drive-thru windows. The plan also has a courtyard with covered seating, a fire pit, a turf play area, and space for three food trucks, and construction is set to begin in August—final approval will come at the August 1 meeting.  KDRV

CRIME NEWS

  • Anthony Nicholas Wheeler (39) was sentenced to 19 months in prison and three years of post-prison supervision after pleading guilty to online sexual corruption of a child and luring a minor when he attempted to engage in sexual activity with a 16-year-old girl he met on Snapchat, with his sentence also requiring him to register as a sex offender, forfeit the phone used, and undergo HIV and DNA testing.  MedfordAlert

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Oregon University President Rick Bailey proposed a 20% salary cut (which would reduce his $290,000 salary by over $50,000) to help manage a $5-million deficit; the Board of Trustees will vote on his request on Wednesday (with the cut taking effect August 1 through next July 1 if approved).  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A small group of elderly Jackson County residents, including retired veterans, are ordered to leave Waters Edge along Rogue River Highway after county code enforcement fined the property for zoning issues—residents must leave by the end of September.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence Medford Medical Center closed its endoscopy department from June 27 to July 8 because some cleaning steps were not completed—free testing is offered to possibly affected patients. The center is working with the Oregon Health Authority and CDC to review its processes.  KOBI-TV
  • A severe veterinarian shortage in Southern Oregon has forced Friends of the Animals in Medford to cut hours at its low-cost spay and neuter clinic—shortages that began after the pandemic are now causing longer wait times and raising the risk of pet overpopulation.  KOBI-TV
