Good morning, Medford.

A recently passed bill will channel millions to boost state arts as OSF in Ashland receives $2.5 million and $375,000 to renovate the historic Black Swan Theatre—both funds are part of HB 5006 that passed both legislative chambers and now awaits the governor’s signature later this week.

Southern Oregon University announced it will eliminate 15 majors—including outdoor leadership, chemistry and media innovation—and 11 minors, which will affect about 64 employees due to a $5 million shortfall.

The university says the cuts will lower the budget by 15% over the next three years and save more than $10 million.

State Representative Pam Marsh held a town hall ice cream social on Sunday in Talent where local residents asked questions on transportation funding, wildfire mitigation, housing, and higher education.

Marsh said regional universities (other than OSU or U of O) should adopt a diversity strategy and credited SOU’s Rick Bailey for his work amid ongoing fiscal challenges.
