Good morning, Medford.
A 50-year-old Eagle Point resident died after being struck by a commercial truck in a northbound lane of Interstate 5 near Central Point early Sunday, Aug 10, when troopers responded at 4:50 a.m.—the truck driver and a passenger were unharmed as investigators work to complete a preliminary review.
Oregon State Police announced that public tips helped identify the individuals involved in a salmon poaching case at the Jackson County Fish Hatchery in Trail, and they have now been cleared as police pursue new leads.
Two juveniles arrested in connection to a 2023 shooting at the Charles Point apartment complex that resulted in the deaths of Dontrell Manninen and Christian Torres were found not guilty Monday morning in Jackson County Court after a week-long trial.
A wildfire near Foster Creek Campground in the High Cascades Ranger District grew from three to 70 acres after being reported on Aug 12 at 4:30 p.m.—firefighters used engines, crews, helicopters and ODOT for traffic control as dry conditions and gusty winds enabled rapid spread while officials investigated the cause.
ODF crews battled a roadside wildfire on Highway 227 near mile marker 44 between Trail and Drew as traffic delays grew and a Medford helicopter made water drops at 7:55 p.m. (the fire was roughly half an acre and additional engines were en route).
On Tuesday at noon the Oregon Department of Forestry declared extreme fire danger on forestry-protected lands in Jackson and Josephine counties due to dry conditions and high wildfire risk—new restrictions ban gas-powered mowers, open flames, fireworks, and any spark-emitting equipment—officials urge residents to follow all safety rules.
A Medford homeowner faced a long wait to remove squatters from her home caused by a tenant leaving, and a new state law—HB 3522—will let police evict squatters within 24 hours starting in January.
Homeowners hope the law will end lengthy and costly eviction delays.
