COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, about 100 community members joined the Southern Oregon ‘Out of the Darkness’ Walk at Pear Blossom Park—honoring loved ones lost to suicide with a memorial garden and beaded necklaces. The organizers announced the next walk will take place on November 22—continuing efforts to raise awareness and support suicide prevention.  KOBI-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters are responding to a grassfire near North Valley View Road close to mile marker 2 that covers about 3/4 acre as multiple engines and a Medford helicopter work to contain it—officials urge the public to avoid the area.  KDRV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oregon has awarded $5 million to Intelifab in Klamath Falls and $5 million to Pacific Wall Systems in Phoenix to expand factory-built housing capacity—these grants aim to boost local production of affordable modular homes. The state’s move will improve oversight, quality control, and delivery speed as part of its broader effort to address the housing crisis.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ashland Community Health Foundation announced it will award over $210,000 in Evans Nursing scholarships for 2025 to help Rogue Valley nursing students reduce education debt — $198,500 will support 14 students at Oregon Health and Science University and Rogue Community College while more than $12,000 will cover licensing fees for 24 Licensed Practical Nursing Program students. The scholarship recipients will be honored at an upcoming awards luncheon.  KDRV
  • Southern Oregon University President Rick Bailey explained the school’s financial challenges—budget cuts and staff reductions—and said the university plans to remain stable. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, firefighters are containing a grassfire on North Valley View Road near mile marker 2 which spans less than one acre—no structures were lost and a Type 2 helicopter plus engines from the Medford office are on scene. Authorities ask residents to avoid the area to ensure safety and allow emergency crews to work without delay.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tina Kotek signed three consumer protection bills today in Salem that ban medical debt on credit reports, require full upfront fees from online sellers and mandate clear car loan disclosures in multiple languages—new laws that will go into effect in January. Lawmakers, consumer advocates and community leaders say the measures aim to provide Oregon families fairer financial transactions.  KOBI-TV
  • Today, Oregon will update its commercial driver license tests to align with the national model so that new guidelines include revised questions on vehicle inspection and basic control skills. HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington have begun a strike authorization vote today after six months of contract talks with Kaiser over wages and working conditions, according to the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals. They will consider a strike after the contract expires on September 30 if fair proposals are not accepted — negotiations continue.  KDRV
  • Providence Medford is hosting a free falls risk education and resource fair for seniors and loved ones—attendees will learn how changes to medication, footwear and home setups can help prevent falls and enjoy tai chi classes to boost balance, with the event held Sept. 23 from 1:15 to 5 p.m. at Jackson County Health and Human Services on South Holly Street.  KDRV
