COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families will join the Walk and Roll Parade of Superheroes at Twin Creeks Park today — riding decorated bikes, skateboards, wheelchairs, and wagons to honor local boy Clint Later. His family organized the parade with support from the Asante Foundation to raise funds for pediatric oncology patients.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christopher Stucke, a Navy veteran and student at Rogue Community College, has been chosen for the Student Veterans of America Leadership Institute that will run Oct. 15—19 in Washington—D.C. He will use the leadership training and networking opportunities to strengthen support for the campus veteran community where he serves as president of the Student Veterans Organization.  MedfordAlert

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ODHS experts say more foster families are needed in Jackson County (4,577 children were in care in 2024) as many kids await safe homes; an event on October 25th at Living Waters Church in Medford (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) will answer questions for those interested in becoming resource parents.  KOBI-TV
  • After several rainy days, fire prevention rules on lands managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District in Jackson and Josephine counties will be lowered to low today at 12:01 a.m.—restrictions on debris burning, fireworks, and certain ammunition will remain in effect.  KDRV
  • Jackson County residents will join the annual Great ShakeOut drill on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m. to practice safety steps like "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" while officials test the new Jackson Alerts system between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  KDRV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Oregon School Activities Association has officially sanctioned boys volleyball as a high school sport, and the first season will launch this upcoming spring. The move follows a strong surge in interest when the sport was given emerging activity status in 2023—68 varsity teams competed last spring, marking the first new OSAA-sanctioned sport since girls wrestling was added.  KOBI-TV
  • Rogue River's Chief Girls played to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 2 at Beck Field as midfielder Carmen Brown held off Sutherlin forward Kaila McClatcher in the final minutes, and they lost 2-0 to Brookings-Harbor on Oct. 7.  Rogue River Press
  • Medford hosted the American Cornhole Organization’s tournament yesterday and is hosting it today at Rogue X where players from over 16 states compete for a $5,000 prize purse and ranking points. The event, part of the ACO’s 21st season, offers free spectator entry and sees local talent like Josh Neville and Phil Swanson aiming to boost the region’s sports scene—reflecting a broader effort to diversify local athletic events.  KOBI-TV
