COMMUNITY NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crater High School supports students through its Threads of Hope program—providing food, clothing, and school supplies via a referral system by staff, family, and friends. The program relies on community donations and aims to add more fresh foods to help students and their families.  KDRV
  • Jefferson Elementary School opened the new Kindness Path after three years of planning; it was built with help from community donors+staff+students to show the school’s focus on kindness and cooperation.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Southern Oregon Goodwill and Dell Reconnect have planned a community e-cycle drive at the Jackson County Expo in Central Point next month. The drive will run on Tuesday, November 4 from 10 am to 6 pm at 1 Peninger Rd – Gate F.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Medford Fire Department launched Squad 12 today to expand EMS services to every day of the week—cutting response times and keeping fire engines available for major emergencies. The new unit recorded two successful CPR saves on its first weekend and will use call data to refine schedules over the next two years.  KOBI-TV
  • The Oregon Department of Human Services said families can continue using funds on their EBT cards during the federal shutdown; it warned that if the shutdown extends into November, new SNAP benefits and emergency food payouts will be paused+existing programs like the $35 Jobs Participant Incentive will keep running until federal funding resumes. This update aims to help households plan their food budgets during these uncertain times.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week runs from October 17 through today, a program started in 2021 to bring attention to voices that are often unheard. Retired biology professor Chris Brinegar from Crescent City shared how he acted quickly when he felt a lump last December—he was diagnosed with stage 1A invasive ductal carcinoma, now takes a daily estrogen pill, and encourages other men to share their stories.  KOBI-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The former Mail Tribune production campus at 33 North Fir Street in downtown Medford is listed for sale at $3.1 million—marking a shift since the paper closed nearly three years ago. The 30,492-square-foot building, cleared of its 40-foot printing press, comes with a 10.35-acre private parking lot for redevelopment or commercial use.  MedfordAlert
  • Oro Vista Village, a 26-unit senior housing project developed by AGE+ opened at 600 South Pacific Highway in Talent and already has seven units filled with 12 approved applications waiting for viewings — the one-bedroom apartments rent for $795 per month with a $750 security deposit and include key appliances while state grants supported the nine-month modular construction process.  KDRV

  • Rogue River Jr. Sr. High girls’ soccer team won a road match (for the first time since 2011) as they work to secure a state playoff berth; the team remains uncertain of its venue and schedule for the Class 3A/2A/1A playoffs, which start either November 1st or November 4th.  Rogue River Press
