COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Josephine County Food Bank Executive Director Josephine Sze said in a Five on 5 interview with NBC5 News Anchor Andrea Boyd that the county's food crisis is growing and delayed SNAP benefits are impacting families—she also advised on how to access food assistance.  KOBI-TV
  • Les Schwab is running a toy drive in partnership with NBC5 that collects new, unwrapped toys, bikes, and monetary donations until December 15 to help local children receive needed gifts via local nonprofits—donations can be dropped off at any Les Schwab location.  KOBI-TV
  • Market of Choice donated $60,000 to food banks and gave an extra $20,000 to the Oregon Food Bank—launching a state-wide food drive that asks customers at its 12 stores to give cash or food. The drive will continue through Thanksgiving to help meet growing needs from SNAP cuts and a government shutdown.  KOBI-TV
  • The Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market in Medford launched a pop-up food pantry and emergency market money initiative to help community members who lost SNAP benefits due to a shutdown. The program offers $40 in vouchers for Tuesday and Thursday markets (up to $80 weekly) and invites vendors to donate leftover produce with no questions asked.  KDRV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Severe storms on Tuesday night in Medford brought heavy rain and winds of nearly 50 mph that knocked down trees and left over 1,000 residents without power as crews from Pacific Power, Advanced Tree Service, and Public Works worked to clear debris and repair lines.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The nonprofit Lomakatsi Restoration Project conducted a controlled pile burn on 24 acres near Jacksonville to clear brush and debris—helping reduce wildfire risks and giving firefighters a better chance to manage any fire that comes through—part of the Jacksonville Community Wildfire Protection Project.  KDRV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Medford residents voted to raise the transient lodging tax to fund a conference center for the Creekside Quarter Project—if tax revenue falls short, residents will pay extra—and the City Council will meet next week to review project details and traffic concerns.  KOBI-TV
  • The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has faced a projected $14M shortfall and will end Jackson County parking permits in 2026 while increasing fees starting Jan. 1—changes meant to sustain park operations. The agency is also opening a public comment period from Dec. 1 to Jan. 15 for additional rate and policy updates.  MedfordAlert
  • The FAA announced flight cuts of 10% at 40 busy airports, starting with a 4% reduction today due to staffing shortages (government shutdown) that may affect thousands of flights. Rogue Valley International Medford Airport said local flights remain unchanged, though travelers on connecting routes should plan for potential delays.  KDRV
  • Oregon State Parks will end a discounted parking agreement for Jackson County residents starting January 1 by raising annual permit fees to $60 for state residents and $75 for out-of-state visitors—officials noted the change is driven by a $14 million budget shortfall. Passes on sale now will soon lose Jackson County benefits, so visitors are urged to buy early before the update takes effect.  KOBI-TV

  • Local leaders met Wednesday at Ashland Hills Hotel in Ashland for the Rogue Way to Well-Being luncheon, where they discussed practical steps to protect access to health care. Former Governor John Kitzhaber and other speakers stressed the need for community support through Rogue Community Health's donor-funded Success Fund to help overcome barriers to care in Jackson County.  KOBI-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jerry Allen, known as the voice of the Ducks, was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame after receiving the Bill Schonely Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony today in Beaverton — his broadcasting journey from high school work in Grants Pass to his 1987 start with the Ducks shows a lasting impact on Oregon sports.  KOBI-TV
